Rooting your Nexus 5 will allow you to install custom ROMS like Paranoid Android and CyanogenMod, root apps, and even get new features that are only allowed when your rooted.
Follow the guide below to root your Nexus 5 device and refer to the videos above for additional help!
This will delete EVERYTHING from your phone! BACK IT UP!
1. Power off your phone.
2. Enter your phone into Bootloader Mode. Press the volume up, volume down, and power button all at the same time. When your phone vibrates let go of the power button, but keep holding onto the volume up and down button.
3. Plug in your phone via microUSB.
4. Download and extract RootNexus5.zip using the link below. Move the folder to your Desktop!
Download RootNexus5.zip
Skip step 5 if your on Mac/Linux/Ubuntu
5. On your computer open up "Device Manager" and if you see "Android Device" with a yellow triangle next to it install the drivers that are included in RootNexus5.zip.
If you see "Bootloader Interface" move to step 6.
6. Open up Command Prompt for Windows or Terminal for Mac and Linux/Ubuntu and type this and press enter after each line:
Windows:
cd Desktop
cd RootNexus5
fastboot oem unlock
Mac:
cd Desktop
cd RootNexus5
./fastboot-mac oem unlock
Linux/Ubuntu:
cd Desktop
cd RootNexus5
./fastboot-linux oem unlock
7. On your Nexus 5 press the volume up for "Yes" and press power button to unlock the bootloader.
Wait until Command Prompt/Terminal finishes then press the power button again on the green start screen.
8. Your phone will now reboot, this boot will take a few minutes so be patient! Once booted up go ahead and setup your phone.
9. Connect your Nexus 5 to your computer and transfer "UPDATE-SuperSU-v2.40.zip". This file is located in "RootNexus5" folder you downloaded earlier.
For Mac users download and install Android File Transfer on your computer and transfer the zip file.
10. Enter back into bootloader mode. Repeat steps 1-3.
Mac and Linux/Ubuntu users skip step 11!
11. Open up "Device Manager" again and if you don't have "Bootloader
Interface" repeat step 5.
12. Go back to Command Prompt/Terminal and type this and press enter after each line:
Windows:
fastboot flash recovery openrecovery-twrp-2.8.2.0-hammerhead.img
Mac:
./fastboot-mac flash recovery openrecovery-twrp-2.8.2.0-hammerhead.img
Linux/Ubuntu:
./fastboot-linux flash recovery openrecovery-twrp-2.8.2.0-hammerhead.img
13. Now on your Nexus 5 phone press the volume up 2x (twice) until you see "Recovery". Then press the power button.
14. You will now be entered into TWRP Recovery mode. Select "Install".
15. Locate and select "UPDATE-SuperSU-v2.40.zip".
16. Slide your finger to install it.
17. Once completed select "Reboot" and your phone will fully boot up. If you look in your app drawer you should have a new app called SuperSU.
18. You are now rooted! To make sure everything worked you can try to install
an app like Titanium Backup that requires root. That app will ask you for SuperSU request.

FAQ:
Q: My phone is stuck on the "X" logo for more than 10 minutes!
A: Enter into recovery mode (follow steps 1-3 and then step 11) and then do a factory reset and clear partition cache or if you have TWRP recovery installed select "Wipe".
